How long should the game be?
In the classic game every pit starts with four seeds. With fewer seeds a game is over quickly, with more it gets longer and more tactical.
From the mancala family
Sowing games like Oware or Bao have been played in Africa and Asia for centuries. Kalah is the best-known variant in Europe and America: two rows of six pits and a store for each side.

How to play
Your goal is to have more seeds in your own store than your opponent at the end. Only the seeds in the store count.

Sowing
Take all seeds out of one of your pits and drop them one by one counterclockwise into the following pits. Your own store gets a seed too, your opponent's store is skipped.

Extra turn
If your last seed lands in your own store, you move again right away. That way you can make several moves in a row.

Capturing
If your last seed lands in an empty pit on your side, you put it and all seeds of the pit across into your store.

End of the game
As soon as one side has no seeds left, the game is over. Each player puts the seeds on their side into their own store, and whoever has more wins.
Three tips to get started
Count to your store
A pit whose seeds reach exactly into your store gives you an extra turn. Often play those pits first, especially the ones close to your store.
Watch the empty pits
An empty pit is a trap for your opponent when many of their seeds lie across from it. And keep an eye on your own full pits across from their empty ones.
Keep seeds on your side
Seeds in your pits are yours at the end. A full pit close to your store is also hard to attack and gives you many options later.
