How to play
Spades is a trick game for two teams of two. Every player bids how many tricks they'll take, spades are always trump.
- 1
Partners
You play with the player opposite you.
Your tricks are counted together. Partners are marked with the same colour.
- 2
Bidding
Say how many tricks you'll take.
Starting left of the dealer, everyone bids 1 to 13. The bids of a team are added up: that's the contract.
- 3
Nil
Bid nil to take no trick at all.
Made: +100 points, failed: -100. Your partner still has to make their own bid.
- 4
Follow suit
Play the suit that was led if you can.
The highest card of that suit wins, unless a spade is in the trick.
- 5
Spades are trump
The highest spade always wins.
If you can't follow suit, you may trump with a spade or throw off any card.
- 6
Breaking spades
Spades can only be led once a spade has been played.
(If you only have spades left, you may lead them anyway.)
- 7
Scoring
Contract made: 10 points per bid trick.
Every extra trick is a bag worth 1 point. Missed the contract: minus 10 per bid trick.
- 8
Bags
10 bags cost 100 points.
Bidding too low collects bags. Watch the bag bar next to the scores.
- 9
End of the game
The first team with 500 points wins.
A team at -200 points or below loses right away.
