8×8 is the classic board. 6×6 is done in a few minutes, 10×10 gets long and tricky.

Good to know

Othello or Reversi?

Othello is the tournament version of Reversi. The difference is in the start: in Othello the four starting discs always sit crosswise in the center. If you know Reversi, you can start right away.

How Othello works

Place, outflank, flip. There isn't much more to the rules.

  1. 1

    The start

Four discs sit crosswise in the center and black moves first. The dots show where black may play.

  2. 2

    Outflank

You may only play where you trap your opponent's discs in a line between your new disc and one of yours. Those discs turn over to your color.

  3. 3

    Every direction

One move can flip discs in several directions at once: horizontally, vertically and diagonally. Here it's three at once.

  4. 4

    Pass and count

If you can't move, you have to pass. When neither side can move, the discs are counted and the color with more discs wins.

  5. Ready?

A game on 6×6 is over quickly. A good way to try out the rules.

Three tips to get started

Corners are gold

A disc in a corner can never be flipped again. From there you can often take the whole edge.

Stay away from the squares next to corners

Playing right next to an empty corner usually hands it to your opponent. Better wait until the corner is taken.

More discs isn't always better

Early on, few discs and lots of possible moves are often better than the other way round. Discs only get counted at the very end.
