How to play

Gin Rummy is rummy for two. Build melds, keep your deadwood low and knock at the right moment. The game spots your melds for you.

  1. 1

    Deal

Each player gets 10 cards. The next card goes face up on the discard pile and the rest form the stock. The non-dealer can take that upcard or pass. Then the dealer gets the same choice.

  2. 2

    Draw and discard

On your turn, draw the top card from the stock or the discard pile. Then discard one. You can't throw back a card you just picked up from the discard pile.

  3. 3

    Melds

A set is 3 or 4 cards of the same rank. A run is 3 or more cards in a row in one suit. Aces are low, so A-2-3 works but Q-K-A doesn't.

  4. 4

    Deadwood

Any card outside a meld is deadwood. Number cards count their face value, face cards count 10 and aces count 1.

  5. 5

    Knock

If you have 10 deadwood or less after discarding, you can knock. Both hands get laid out and compared.

  6. 6

    Gin!

No loose cards at all? That's gin. You get 25 bonus points plus all of your opponent's deadwood.

  7. 7

    Lay off

After a knock, the opponent can add deadwood to the knocker's melds. That's not allowed after gin.

  8. 8

    Undercut

The knocker scores the difference in deadwood. But if the opponent has the same or less, they win the hand and get 25 bonus points.

  9. 9

    To the goal

If only two cards are left in the stock, the hand ends and nobody scores. First to reach the goal wins.
