Two ways to win

Pente plays like Gomoku, except that stones get captured. So you don't just build rows, you also have to look after your own stones.

Five in a row

Just like in Gomoku, five of your stones next to each other win, in any direction.

Capture five pairs

Every captured pair counts. Take ten of your opponent's stones off the board and you win, even without a row.

Board size

The classic board is 19×19. On 15×15 things get tighter and captures come earlier.

How Pente works

If you know Gomoku, there's only one new rule to learn: capturing.

  1. 1

    Start in the center

Black always places the first stone on the center point. After that you take turns.

  2. 2

    Capture pairs

If exactly two of your opponent's stones sit between your new stone and one of yours, you take both off the board.

  3. 3

    The gap is safe

If you place a stone into such a gap yourself, nothing happens. Only the move that closes the bracket captures.

  4. 4

    Five wins

Five in a row or five captured pairs. Whatever happens first decides the game.

  5. Ready?

Against the bot you quickly learn which pairs are in danger.

Three tips to get started

Watch your pairs

Two of your stones side by side are a target as soon as one end is open. A third stone or a blocked end keeps them safe.

Captures win time

A capture often breaks up one of your opponent's rows as well. You get a pair and remove a threat in the same move.

Keep an eye on the count

Once your opponent has four pairs, a single capture is enough for them. From then on you can't allow any bracket.

What you can do here

Play the bot

The bot captures pairs, protects its own and plays on three levels.

Capture count

Next to the board you always see how many pairs each side has captured.

Time control

From bullet to classical, with a bonus per move or no clock at all.

Take back

When a move is taken back, the captured stones come back onto the board too.

Move list

Step through the game with the arrow keys, captures included.
