Pick your board
Play online against friends or the bot, with time control, take backs and proper counting. One click opens the lobby with the right board size.
Atari-Go
The first player to capture a stone wins. You learn liberties and capturing without having to worry about territory and counting yet.
Go in 7 steps
The rules fit on a beer mat. The strategy will keep you busy for a lifetime.
- 1
Place
Black starts. After that you take turns placing a stone on an empty intersection, or you pass. Once a stone is down, it doesn't move.
- 2
Liberties
The empty neighbouring points of a stone are its liberties. Connected stones share their liberties.
- 3
Capture
A move that takes the last liberty of an opponent group captures it and removes it from the board.
- 4
No suicide
A stone without liberties may not be placed. The exception: it captures opponent stones in doing so.
- 5
Ko
A single stone that just captured a single stone may not be recaptured immediately.
- 6
End
When both players pass in a row, you mark the dead stones. Here it's a white stone inside black's area.
- 7
Count
Surrounded points are territory. Whoever has more points under the chosen scoring wins.
Ready?
The 9×9 board is perfect for your first game, against a friend or the bot.
Two ways to count
You pick the scoring in the lobby. It hardly ever changes the result, only how the points are counted.
Area (Chinese)
living stones + territory + komi
Every stone of yours and every surrounded point counts. Prisoners don't matter, so moves inside your own territory cost nothing.
Territory (Japanese)
territory + prisoners + komi
Surrounded points and captured or dead opponent stones count. Unnecessary moves inside your own territory cost a point here.
Example without komi: the totals differ, black's lead of 5 points is the same. In a game white receives komi to make up for moving second: choose 0, 0.5, 5.5, 6.5 or 7.5.
Everything you need for a game
